Adopt A Horse

Cabin Creek Horse Rescue and Retirement Foundation is looking for caring individuals with equestrian experience, who are committed to providing permanent, safe and caring homes for our retired racehorses.  We have many retiring Thoroughbreds, no longer able to compete, that could still enjoy life as a pleasure, trail, dressage, event, or show horse.

The Adoption Process Is Simple.

1. Select A Horse To Adopt - You can work directly with Cabin Creek or with one of our Retraining Stables to adopt a horse. You may have already decided on a horse from one of our Retraining Stables.  If not, call us to initiate the process.  Adoptions are most successful if we can match you with the right horse.

2. Complete Our Application Process - Be prepared to discuss your equestrian experience, describe your location, and answer a few qualifying questions.  Our goal is to identify the right horse to meet your needs, to match your skill level, and to suit your personality.  If the right horse is not available at the time, we will continue to watch for your desired match.

3. Pay Adoption Fees -
Cabin Creek asks for a minimum donation of only $150.00 for every adopted horse.  Any additional fees associated with rehabilitation or retraining services can be negotiated directly with the Retraining Stable that is working with you. Some organizations, such as Turning Point Farm, kindly donate any collected fees back to Cabin Creek to help defer a portion of our costs.

4. Sign Our Adoption Agreement - We have found that a clear understanding of the commitment made by you when adopting a retired racehorse is important. A copy of our Adoption Agreement is available for your review.

5. Take Delivery - You will now be responsible for the care of your adopted horse. Discounts may be available to you from the Retraining Stable for extended board, short-term board with additional training, personal instruction, or transportation.  Every horse has been vaccinated and has a current Coggins certificate.
Plus every adopted horse receives a certificate that qualifies them for Cabin Creek's Racehorse Retirement program.

6. Any Problems, Return Our Horse - We want your adoptive experience with our retired horse to be a permanent and positive relationship.  We understand if a horse no longer meets your needs, or if your personal situation changes.  Cabin Creek will take our retirees back into the program, at anytime, for any reason. Bring them back!

Cabin Creek will always welcome back an adopted retiree.
