Horse Rescuers' Good Intentions Can Result In Bad Press For Racing Industry
3/6/2010 12:34:55 PM

Horse Racing Industry Unfairly Linked to "Racehorse Slaughter"

Just to take a quick look at the negative web noise and news regarding racehorse rescues, I ran the following GoogleTM searches and got these startling results:
  • 558,000 hits for "racehorse slaughter"
  • 25,700 hits for "racehorse slaughter in Pennsylvania"
I was amazed. Over one-half million hits came back for the search "racehorse slaughter."  And worse yet, 25,700 of those listings were for "racehorse slaughter in Pennsylvania."  Talk about negative press.  It's unbelievable that such horrific images are being so closely associated with racehorses and Pennsylvania's horse racing industry.

Horse Rescuers Sending Negative Message to Racing Officials

You are not alone if you have received that frantic call from the well-intentioned horse rescuer, standing on the floor of Camelot Auction in New Jersey, or New Holland Auction In Pennsylvania, who's urgently calling to say:

"Your horse is at the auction and is going to slaughter if you don't buy him out of the killer pen now!

Your Help Is Needed To Care For Ex-Racehorses

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED TO CARE FOR EX-RACEHORSES.

We are rescuing Thoroughbreds that can no longer compete at the race track.  Cabin Creek Rescue and Retirement Foundation LLC is a horse rescue charity based in Bernville, Pennsylvania.

  • We heal, rehabilitate, retrain and then place ex-racehorses into safe, caring homes through adoption. Since 2008, we have placed over 300 horses into adoptive homes.
  • We also provide Lifetime Racehorse Retirement care for those older or more seriously injured ex-racehorses that are unlikely to ever be placed into adopting homes.

It costs about $10.00 a day to care for each rescued horse. Plus many horses incur additional costs from surgery, post-surgery lay-up care, and extended time to heal. There are many easy ways you can help us save the horses.

  • Sponsor A Retired Horse - It's easy - Just  select one of our retired racehorses to sponsor and make a monetary contribution in his behalf.
  • Foster A Retired Horse - Care for a retired racehorse at your farm.  These horses make great companions and pasture pals.
  • Donate Horse "Stuff" - We need hay, feed, dewormers, vaccines, winter blankets, farm equipment, etc.  We also need items to support our fundraising activities such as stallion breedings, discounts on horse care services and products for resale.
  • Or you may want to adopt a horse.
